I’m struggling…
This happened last Sunday.
The plan for the day was set.
The agenda for the day was Do Nothing.
And, it was going great. 🙌
Woke up late, still celebrating India's victory over Pakistan in last night’s match, ordered chole bahture for breakfast, and (like anyone who has chole bhature for breakfast does after) went to nap.
So far the whole Do Nothing thing was going well.
Then, I started watching Friends.
I was on S5, E4
And my day was ruined.
It’s one of their striking episodes, where Joey and Phoebe have a long discussion about the nature of act of kindness - Joey states that all acts of kindness are selfish, and Phoebe refuses to believe that.
As much as some might think it’s a comedy show meant to make us laugh, I couldn’t help thinking about this -
Are we really selfish in everything we do for others?
As soon I started thinking (overthinking) about this thought, my day was ruined.
After all, what have we heard since childhood?
Sabki madad karo 🙏
my immediate reaction as soon as this thought entered my mind 😆
Let me take you to my 7th grade. I had a friend back then, let us call him ‘dost’.
Now dost copied from me in every exam. (it was me who copied from him, but this is my story so I will make myself sound better :P)
Now, I was too innocent to think anything about it at that time.
But now that I think of it - we both weren’t helping each other all this time.
We were just making ourselves lazy and over-dependent on each other.
Or maybe we just helping each other because we were friends, and he got Maggi in his tiffin everyday which I liked to eat :P
I’m struggling to figure out if we should help someone or wait till they figure it out for themselves.
It’s been about a week,
I still don’t have an answer.
I cannot recall the name of the person, but there was a scientist who said thank you to people who did not help him, they made him capable of doing everything himself.
He was really onto something there.
So, what do we do the next time we see a someone across the street who needs a little help?
What is the best way to help them? And Is it really best to help them?
Would love your views on these dilemmas! Have you gone through any of these or do you have a solution?
